Donald Trump has demanded to travel in a gold-plated carriage during his upcoming state visit to the U.K. in October. Trump made it clear that the carriage procession to Buckingham Palace should be an “essential element” for his visit.
According to the London Times, the security operation required to allow such a procession will be “unprecedented.”
London’s Metropolitan Police are already facing a huge security headache as they prepare for “the biggest public order operation in several years,” as Trump’s visit is sure to attract protests on an enormous scale.
President Barack Obama opted to travel in an armored motorcade during his visit, out of consideration for his hosts.
A source told the Times:
The vehicle which carries the president of the United States is a spectacular vehicle, designed to withstand a massive attack like a low-level rocket grenade. If he’s in that vehicle he is incredibly well protected and on top of that he can travel at enormous speed. If he is in a golden coach being dragged up the Mall by a couple of horses, the risk factor is dramatically increased.
