According to NBC News New York, an Illinois congressman was arrested for protesting Trump’s immigration policies. This man was arrested simply for practicing his right to free speech.
Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez met with Immigration Control and Enforcement (ICE) officials earlier this week to discuss Trump’s aggressive immigration policies. He demanded information on some upcoming deportations and said he was willing to risk arrest to get what he wanted.
So he organized a sit-in after his meeting with ICE officials, along with 22 other concerned citizens. Local lawyers, community leaders, and local elected officials joined the protest.
Gutierrez’s spokesman Douglas Rivlin said, “They were asking about specific cases and about the general conduct of ICE and deportations. The congressman has decided that he did not get the answers he was looking for from the ICE regional director and he’s going to be staying inside until he gets answers, even if that means risking arrest.”
But the ICE officers didn’t appreciate this protest of their immoral policies. So they reacted the only way they know how, by arresting Gutierrez.
According to witnesses, ICE arrested Gutierrez and handcuffed him at about 1:30. But then ICE seemed to reconsider the ridiculousness of the situation and cut the handcuffs off Rep. Gutierrez.
Gutierrez was concerned about several specific immigration cases in his district. So he confronted ICE officials, but he didn’t get the answers he wanted.
This includes the case of Francisca Lino, whose husband and four of her children are U.S. citizens. Lino has worked since 2008 for a deferment of her pending deportation.
But we have a new president in the White House who doesn’t care about breaking up families. So ICE told Lino that they will deport her in July.
These deportations really angered Gutierrez, however. According to Rivlin, “The congressman said this is reprehensible that immigrants are being treated this way, that the rules are changed without any information or notice, that low priorities for deportation are being removed from the country and the congressman wants to get answers from the staff here, and he has not been getting any answers.”
Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez staged a sit-in to protest the upcoming deportations of undocumented immigrants in Chicago. But ICE officials tried to arrest him for daring to protest Trump’s immigration bullying.
Instead, ICE said that the protestors should call the White House to get the answers they wanted. Rivlin had the brilliant response that “Well, maybe they (ICE) need to call the White House.”
Trump’s immigration policies are causing confusion and heartache around the country. For example, his first illegal Muslim travel ban prevented legal immigrants from entering the country and left them stranded at airports.
The courts, however, issued a stay on this executive order. Trump tried again with a slightly reworded order, but the courts once again struck it down.
Trump also ramped up the deportations of undocumented immigrants, including immigrants that haven’t committed violent offenses. As a result, families are being broken up and even veterans are getting kicked out of the country that they fought for.
And now the government is arresting anyone who dares to protest Trump’s evil immigration policies, even elected officials. Please share this story on Facebook to support Gutierrez and the fourth amendment.
